4 years ago, my mom was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener … with chest pains. It was found she was suffering from a series of heart attacks and was admitted immediately.
She remained in surgery for 14 hours … they had to complete a 6 bypass procedure. During the surgery, several complications would make things more difficult. They had to go back in a stop a major bleed out. Following this, mom was placed in a coma, where she remained for 7 days to follow. Doctors told us her odds of survival were slim and that we should start making final arrangements.
We were devastated and in disbelief. Mom was a fighter and way to stubborn to leave us like this! After seeing no signs of life, I played a recording in mom’s ear, from my phone. It was my two little boys telling Gramma they loved her and wanted her to come home.
For the first time in 7 days, a tear fell from mom’s left eye. The nurses told me to keep talking to her … she was still in there and was trying to fight her way back.
A medical miracle? A gift from God? Or just the will to live?
Mom is still with us today and living life to the fullest and thanking her lucky stars and her 2 grandsons for keeping her with us.
Thanks to the incredible team in the St. Mary’s Cardiac Center, mom survived her heart attack and lives with heart disease and a whole new appreciation for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Donations to Heart and Stroke and awareness. We couldn’t be more thankful.
