Of course this weekend was all about Sunday night at the Oscar’s! It was a very musical Oscars ceremony too, with Lady Gaga, The Weeknd and Sam Smith all performing and up for best original song. the winner however was Sam Smith for “Writing’s On The Wall” from Spectre (Music and Lyric by Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith).
Sam Smith also had one of the worst moments at the Oscars though! His claim during his acceptance speech that he’s the first openly gay winner in the category was immediately fact-checked backstage in the press room. It was pointed out that Elton John actually won in 1994 for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” from The Lion King. He saved face when a reporter suggested that it’s actually better for the gay community that there have been two winners now. “Two’s my lucky number, so it’s all good.”
FYI, one of the night’s BEST moments was noted as Chris Rock‘s opening monologue, “If they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even be get this job.”
“SPOTLIGHT” won best picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role went to Brie Larson for Room.
AND HE DID IT! Best Actor in a Leading Role: Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant!
Sadly, here at home, the Guelph Storm have failed to make the play-offs for the first time in 24 years. For the first time since their inaugural season in 1991-92, the Guelph Storm will not be in the playoffs. A win by the Saginaw Spirit Sunday eliminated Guelph from the playoffs, and The Storm lost 5-2 to the Sarnia Sting in Sarnia too. Guelph will host the Ottawa 67’s on Friday, here’s hoping for a better outcome!
