Call him what you want: Drake, Drizzy, 6God, Wheelchair Jimmy, Aubrey – just don’t call him a lightweight when it comes to hosting Saturday Night Live. He definitely did it ALL!
Drake never really broke a sweat all night, despite the fact his characters were often the main focus of the skits. Sure, the material wasn’t always hilarious, and his performance of One Dance was a little shaky, but Drake came out of it all unscathed – and never had Toronto too far from his mind.
Before Drake did anything else in his monologue, he mentioned his hometown. “Where’s Toronto at?” he asked the studio audience. “Is Toronto in the house tonight?” You can just hear the city sigh with satisfaction. After telling the Americans in the audience they can’t move in with him if Trump becomes president, Drizzy gets down to business and sings about what he does best: The Internet meme.
Jay Pharoah does impressions of 50 Cent, Jay Z, Will Smith, T.I, DMX and other rappers including Drake, who comes out and confronts him!
Drake led with his first solo Billboard No. 1 song, One Dance, but the first half of the performance was not his best. His voice struggled in the lower register and since neither of the artists he used on the song’s hook (Wizkid or Kyla) were on stage to help him out, it was just Drake dancing on his own with a very Hotline Bling-ish set and a backing track until two dancers arrived halfway through. It was kind of awkward, but perfect fodder for more Drake memes – and maybe that was the plan.
