It’s the scam that just won’t seem to go away.
Guelph Police are again warning the public about calls or emails claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.
Police say potential targets are contacted and told that their income statement is incomplete and they have an outstanding debt. It might also say you’re embezzling money and not filed taxes in years. These calls should be ignored.
E-mails often contain a link in the message that takes you to a form requesting personal information.
Police say the escalation of this scam is worrisome but add the CRA does not contact people via email, and there are a number of safety precautions taken with personal information if your are called by the agency.
Anyone receiving a suspicious communication should report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or to the institution it appears to be from.
