TODAY (May 26th) is opening day for the Special Olympics Ontario Spring Games here in the Royal City!
Chris Probst, Detective Constable for the Guelph Police and Games Manager for the Special Olympics, (also Magic Morning co-host for a day!) said this is expected to be one of the largest spring games to date, with over 750 athletes attending.
Tonight the torch run starts at the University of Guelph’s Johnston Green at around 5:45 p.m. and makes its way through the city to the Sleeman Centre in downtown for the 7:30 p.m. opening ceremonies. Approximately 150 runners will carry the torch, escorted by police to the Special Olympics flame at the opening ceremonies.
The games will be held at seven different venues, including the University of Guelph, as well as several Guelph high schools. The games include swimming, power-lifting, basketball, rhythmic gymnastics, and both five- and ten-pin bowling.
***The events are free and open to the public, with seating on a first come first serve basis.***
