Guelph’s unemployment rate skyrocketted by almost one full percentage point in May, to 5.7 percent.
Over the previous 3 months, it had averaged 4.8 percent, and at one point, was the lowest in the country.
Waterloo Region recorded a rate of 5.5 percent. For the first time in many months, the Regions unemployment rate is lower than Guelph’s.
Oeterborough has the distinction of lowest rate in the country: 2.8 percent.
A surge in public-sector jobs delivered a boost to Canada’s labour market last month and helped drop the national unemployment rate to 6.9 per cent _ its lowest level since last July.
the country gained 13 thousand, 800 jobs in May, including 30 thousand 200 public-sector positions _ offsetting weakness in Alberta.
The data also showed that Alberta continued to struggle as a massive wildfire forced production shutdowns in its economically critical oilsands region and triggered the evacuation of Fort McMurray.
The report says Alberta’s unemployment rate soared to 7.8 per cent.
