It’s a relatively new phenomenon. Pop-up Halloween costume shops are convenient for the consumer but put a real strain on independent, year round costume stores. They show up on Labour Day and are usually gone before the jack-O-lanterns rot.
Missy Morrow is the owner of Party Corner Costume at Victoria and York Road. She says small business owners just don’t have the massive budgets these large organizations have.
Those budgets pay for all the advertising you run-into this time of year. Not to mention the giant inflatable pumpkins on the roofs.
Morrow says these pop-up stores contribute nothing to the local economy in the long term and end up hurting small business owners instead. She says to try to compete, she has to focus on customer service, something the big guys aren’t focused on.
