No doubt you have had your social network news feeds swamped with the #BellLetsTalk hashtag today, and you may be wondering what this is all about and why should you care anyway?
First of all, this is NOT about whether or not you support Bell, are a Bell customer, or even work for Bell… The parent company of Magic 106 is Corus Communications a giant Canadian telecommunications company that competes with Bell all year long. Today, however is NOT about competition.. and I would submit to you that today is not about whether or not 5-cents from all your texts/tweets/phone calls goes to support Mental Health initiatives across the country.
Today IS about awareness. It’s about learning that the face of Mental Illness may be very different than what you think.
1 in 5 Canadians live with some form of Mental Illness and we are talking about clinical depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorders, and other mood disorders all the way up to schizophrenia and many diseases. Yes, these are diseases.
In the same way that Cancer is a disease, so is the Mental Illness.
The thing is still in Canada we don’t like to talk about Mental Illness; we feel ashamed… embarrassed.. and alone. The same stigma does not apply to other diseases but with Mental Illness it does.
