The two upper levels of government were doling out the cash at the University of Guelph this morning.
The federal government handed out 10.7 million dollars, including 6 million to Animal Biosciences professor Christine Baes. She’ll head up a project with Kitchener-based Hybrid Turkey’s, selecting more feed-efficient birds.
1.3 million will be used to increase production of aged cheddar cheese.
And 3.4 million dollars will go toward improving canola crop productivity.
The province is putting over 940 thousand dollars into a program that will see researchers at the university create elite canola varieties by providing access to genes and gene combinations, that are not available through conventional crop breeding.
