Two PhD Students at the University of Guelph have been awarded Vanier Scholarships.
Laura Jane Webber is studying maternal and neonatal care for the Inuit, specifically working with Northern Partners to study the health and well being of Inuit Women and their families during pregnancy and childbirth.
Ashley Ross, the second recipient, is studying the use of oncolytic viruses, a naturally occurring virus, and whether it can infect and kill cancer cells. Ross is also studying photodynamic therapy, a light-sensitive drug which concentrates inside tumours. When an external light source is turned on, the drug is activated, killing the cancer cell.
Both will receive 50-thousand dollars a year for up to three years for their studies.. The funds are donated by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
