A Professor at the University of Guelph has been named to the Order of Canada. Prof. Dionne Brand was recognized alongside 98 others to be appointed to the order by Governor General David Johnston. Brand is a Novelist and Poet, who moved to Canada from Trinidad when she was 17 years old. She was recognized today for her contributions to Canadian Literature and Poetry and for promoting awareness of Gender Studies and Intercultural Relations. Brands Writing often explores gender, race, sexuality, injustice and feminism. Brand has also received the Governor General’s Award for Poetry and the Trillium Prize for Literature. Since the creation of the Order in 1967, 7,000 people have been named to Canada’s Highest Honor.
