The Guelph Storm now have the top two picks from the 2016 OHL Priority Selection on their blueline after acquiring defenceman Owen Lalonde from the Sudbury Wolves.
Lalonde was taken 2nd overall by the Wolves after the Storm grabbed defenceman Ryan Merkley 1st overall.
Storm General Manager and Head Coach George Burnett announced Wednesday Lalonde was traded for defenceman Nolan Makkonen and several future picks.
“(Lalonde) is going to have an impact with our lineup immediately,” Burnett said in an interview with Storm play-by-play broadcaster, Larry Mellott.
In his first year with the Wolves, he posted 12 points in 64 games during the 2016-17 season. Lalonde also picked up a silver medal with Team Canada Black at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in November.
“I’m thrilled for this opportunity and can’t wait to get to Guelph to meet my new teammates,” said Lalonde in a statement. “I’ve heard so many great things about the city and the fans in Guelph and I’m excited to get to work.”
Storm training camp begins Monday, August 28.
