With the new school year approaching, the Wellington-Dufferin Student Transportation Services (STWDSTS) want to remove some of those jitters for new students.
All children entering Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten and their families are invited to the “Kindy Ride Day” on Tuesday, August 29.
“The family can do it together so that the students are comfortable getting on the bus for the very first time,” said Wendy Dobson, General Manager of STWDSTS.
The session includes a short video, question and answer period, and a family bus ride.
Dobson said the school bus can be intimidating for four and five-year-olds.
“It’s a big vehicle, there are a lot of students on the vehicle,” she said. “So this is an opportunity to ease into riding the school bus.”
Dobson mentioned there is also a lot parents can learn from the session, including what time their kids need to be at the stop in the morning and what time to pick them up in the afternoon.
Even if your child isn’t taking the bus to school, Dobson said they should attend the session too.
“At some point in time, they will get on that big yellow bus,” she said. “The same rules apply, the danger zones are still the same, the behaviour on the bus is still the same – it’s great for all students.”
