UPDATE (Aug 25):
Premier Kathleen Wynne is rejecting the teachers’ union call to remove the name of Sir John A. Macdonald from public elementary schools in the province.
Wynne says she acknowledges Macdonald was far from perfect but we need to teach children the full history of Canada including colonialism along with finding effect meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
ORIGINAL (Aug 24):
The Ontario Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario wants the name of Canada’s first Prime Minister removed from all schools across the province.
A motion passed last week at the ETFO’s annual meeting calls for any schools and buildings bearing the name Sir John A. Macdonald be renamed because of what the union calls Macdonald’s role as the ‘architect of genocide against Indigenous Peoples.’
Macdonald was the P.M. during the time the federal government approved the first residential schools in the country.
