ABOVE: Hurricane Irma cuts swath of destruction in Caribbean
As much of the Caribbean recovers from Hurricane Irma, a Guelph realtor is raising money for the tiny island of Anguilla.
Reports from the British territory suggest most of the island has been devastated by the storm and Gloria Shoon said many people she knows have been left homeless.
“We ourselves have what we consider to be part of our extended family that have been many generations in Anguilla,” Shoon said in an interview with CJOY News. “They have found themselves without homes.”
Shoon has set up a GoFundMe page and said a team of Canadians will be travelling to the island later this fall to assist in the rebuild.
Anguilla has a population of only 15,000 and lies east of Puerto Rico and north of Saint Martin.
Officials said at least 30 people died in parts of the Caribbean as the hurricane blew through.
